What is An Affidavit of Single Status?

Canadians planning to get married abroad may be required to obtain an Affidavit of Single Status. This document is sometimes called an Affidavit of No Impediment to Marriage, a Certificate of Freedom to Marry, or a Single Status Affidavit.

The affidavit of single status is a sworn statement that confirms that the person is free to marry. It includes information such as the person's full name, date of birth, current address, and marital status. The affidavit must be signed by a notary public or commissioner of oaths.

How do I know if I need an Affidavit of Single Status?

Some, but not all, foreign governments require the affidavit of single status before allowing a Canadian citizen to get married within their country. In some cases, the affidavit may also be required by a Canadian embassy or consulate before they will issue a marriage license.
